Beyond our main productions and musical theatre cabarets, we have community and educational outreach programs for all ages, and our annual John Alexander National Vocal Competition and Alexander Awards Concert recognizes outstanding, young opera and musical theatre vocalists. We are Mississippi’s only professional opera company, a founding member of Opera America, and the ninth oldest continuously operating opera company in the United States. From the silver screen to the golden tones of his voice over the air, Frank Sinatra was one of the most captivating performers of the 20th century.

“Old Blue Eyes” collaborated with some of the greatest musicians of all time including Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Dean Martin and the Rat Pack. Winner of multiple awards, an Oscar and Golden Globes, the “Chairman of the Board” is still beloved! Join vocalist Peter Lake, Frank’s “Shadow,” recounting moments that shaped the man who brought us “New York, New York,” “The Way You Look Tonight,” and “Come Fly with Me.”

Nathaniel Adams Coles was born in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1919. In 1937 he became known as Nat “King” Cole. In the early fifties, he began to conquer the charts with ballads like “Mona Lisa,” “Love,” “Smile,” and “When I Fall in Love.”

In 1990, he received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 1991, his daughter, Natalie, recorded “Unforgettable” as a duet with her father which won seven Grammy awards! Join us as we celebrate the centennial of the birth of one of America’s musical icons.

This musical journey through the ups and downs of love features songs from Avenue Q, Kurt Weill’s Street Scene, songs by William Bolcom, and American popular classics.

“We wanted to tell a story using songs from all genres, bring a little bit of the formal recital repertoire onto a casual stage, then couple it with a belter tune from a contemporary musical.” The result is a journey about a young woman’s discovery of love in all its quirky variations, both through falling into it and falling out of it.

 


FEEL THE EARTH MOVE - CAROLE KING TRIBUTE • CABARET SERIES

Carole King is an internationally known composer, and singer-songwriter, who without question is the most successful female songwriter of the last half of the twentieth century.

In the 1960s she and her first husband, Gerry Goffin, wrote more than two dozen hits for numerous artists. Success as a performer began in the 1970s, when she performed her own songs. Her album Tapestry topped the U.S. chart and remained on the charts for six+ years. She has recorded 25 solo albums with estimated sales of more than 75 million.


LA BOHÈME • MAIN STAGE PRODUCTION

Our largest production of the year is Puccini’s, LA BOHÈME. Set in Paris during the 1840s, a group of young bohemians struggle to make ends meet.

Rodolfo, a poet, and his friends, Marcello, Schaunard, and Colline, manage to have an enjoyable take on life despite their extreme financial difficulties. During the cold winter, a torrid romance is kindled between Rodolfo and a beautiful seamstress named Mimì, but love is not the only thing lurking in the city; tragedy and sadness await them all. Come join us for this tale of love and loss that is sure to touch everyone’s heart with arias like the “Che gelida manina” (tenor) and “Si, mi chiamano Mimì” (soprano) and Musetta’s famous waltz, “Quando m ‘en vò.”
