On Saturday, September 28, 2014, the Mississippi Opera presented the first Voices of Mississippi Competition at Belhaven University. There were over 40 singers from around the state who competed in this new competition, which is designed to identify the very best opera and musical theatre voices in the state.
On Monday, February 23, 2015 at 7:30 p.m., the winners of this competition will appear in concert at Duling Hall (622 Duling Ave., Jackson, MS). There were two categories, the Young Professional Category and the Student Artist Category. The winners in the Young Professional Category were Rebecca Sorenson (first place), Crystal Morris (second place), and Rachel Alexander (third place). In the Student Artist Category the winners were Edwin Davis (first place), Andrew Ross (second place) and Jessica Ziegelbauer (third place).
The competition was amazing and the judges were so impressed that along with the three performers that they named two honorable mentions in each category. In the Young Professional Category the honorable mentions were Stacey Trenteseaux and Graham Anduri. In the Student Artist Category the honorable mentions were Jaime Ferguson and Emma Wilson.
