MISSISSIPPI OPERA ANNOUNCES LINEUP FOR HISTORIC 70th SEASON
Jackson, MS—The Mississippi Opera, the nation’s 9th oldest continuously operating opera company, now celebrating its 70th year of operatic excellence in Mississippi, has announced the lineup for its 2015—2016 season.
“We are opening our historic 70th season with Cavalleria Rusticana on November 21, 2015 at Belhaven University Center for the Arts,” said artistic director Jay Dean. “This was our very first production in 1945.” The first part of this 70th Anniversary Gala will be a retrospective on Mississippi Opera’s history since 1945 (researched and written by longtime Mississippi Opera patron Dick Wilson). Mr. Wilson will be joined on stage by Belhaven University President Dr. Roger Parrott and Dr. Stephen Sachs, Chairman of Belhaven’s Music Department.
The second annual Voices of Mississippi Winners' Concert comes to the Belhaven University Center for the Arts, October 10 at 7:30 pm. “This outstanding concert features some of Mississippi’s very best singers and the annual competition is an excellent way for the Mississippi Opera to expand our talent base for roles in upcoming productions,” Dean noted.
The increasing popular Cabarets at Duling Hall are set for October 26 (Belhaven on Broadway), January 18 (A Night at the Tonys), February 22 (A New York State of Mind) and March 21 (Simply Sondheim). Doors open at 6:00 pm with a performance at 7:30 pm in historic Fondren’s Duling Hall. These cabaret style venues are light, fun, musical theatre programs featuring an outstanding array of local and visiting talent.
Mississippi Opera’s holiday classic Amahl and the Night Visitors, directed by Dr. Ed Dacus, returns to the Madison Center for the Arts, Sunday, December 20 at 3:30 pm.
“We will conclude our wonderful 70th Anniversary season with a true audience favorite: Bizet’s Carmen starring Kirsten Chavez and Richard Troxell, our first production in the newly renovated Thalia Mara Hall, set for April 23, 2016,” said Mississippi Opera Administrative Director, Tippy Garner.
