MISSISSIPPI OPERA FINISHES 73RD SEASON WITH THE MOST FAMOUS OPERA IN HISTORY

Jackson, MS —Mississippi Opera will finish its incomparable 2018-2019 season with arguably the most famous opera of all time: Puccini’s LA BOHÈME.

Set in Paris in 1846-47, a group of young bohemians struggle to make ends meet. During the cold winter, a torrid romance is kindled between the poet Rodolfo and the beautiful seamstress Mimi, but love is not the only thing lurking in the city; tragedy and sadness await them all.

La Bohème features the musical talents of Ashley Bell as Mimi, Michael Boley as Rodolfo, Michelle Lange as Musetta, Travis Sherwood as Marcello, Andre Chiang as Schaunard, and Stefanos Koroneos as Colline.

Boley made his Mississippi Opera debut last season in Puccini’s Turandot singing the profoundly demanding role of Calaf. The rest of the principal singers listed above are all making their Mississippi Opera debut in this production, which is directed by stage director J.J. Hudson and conducted by Jay Dean.

In addition, the show will feature the Mississippi Opera Chorus, the Mississippi Opera Orchestra, students from the St. Andrew’s Episcopal School Choral program, and young artists from the University of Mobile Opera and Musical Theatre program. The unique set for the production has been designed and built by Wes Hanson, a faculty member in the University of Southern Mississippi Theatre Department. Hanson designed the set for Turandot last season.

This beautiful tale of love and loss is sure to touch everyone’s heart with arias like “Che gelida manina” and “Si, mi chiamano Mimi,” and of course, Musetta’s famous waltz, “Quando m’en vò.”

Artistic Director, Jay Dean said of the opera:

“For those who may not be experienced opera goers, La Bohéme is the perfect opera with which to start. The story is passionate and the music is some of the most beautiful music you will ever hear.  Puccini was a master at writing music that touches the heart, and never gets old, no matter how many times you hear it.”
